Re: 990EZ filing for 2016

This week I have had two chapter notify me that they have had issues in filing the 990EZ with the United States Internal Revenue Service. Mike Gratis of MA VI was one of those that experienced the problem first. He was able to resolve this issues for his chapter, and passed the information along to me.

Apparently the IRS changed their web site for filing the 990EZ on February 29, 2016, and the site has become user unfriendly. So if you are having issues, please use these helpful hints, as provided by Mike:

- Make sure any box being filled out is 35 characters, or less.
- Use ONLY letters, numbers, spaces or a hyphen. Anything else will throw the system for a loop.
- Do NOT add your web site, even though there is a box asking for it.

If you experience any problems, you will still need to contact the IRS and not the International Office. I hope you find this information helpful.

John Gordon, International Treasurer

It is very important that each US Conference and Chapter maintain a tax exempt status as a 501(c)10 entity. Without this status they become taxable. Every dollar that comes in (even dues) can become taxable. That is not a good thing.

Chances are that their bank accounts are under the tax ID number assigned to them as a 501(c)10. When they lose their exempt status this number is no longer valid. Imagine the banking problems, IRS inquiries, and etc. that can follow. All of this because someone didn't take 5 minutes to file an online form 990N with the IRS each year. That is all it takes unless they have more that $50,000.00 income in a year.

If the Chapter has not filed for 3 consecutive years they will need to file for reinstatement. Teh International Office can provide them with the supporting documents they will need to send to the IRS with the application and the fee.
