Blue Knights® International LEMC
Last updated: 28-Jun-2015

The Blue Knights® International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Inc. is a non-profit fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement officers who enjoy riding motorcycles. In the Spring of 1974, several law enforcement officers from the Bangor, Maine, USA area met and formed a small, local motorcycle club.  The Blue Knights have more than 640 chapters, 19,000+ members in 11 Conferences within 27 countries.

President DJ Alvarez responds to newspaper article:

I’d like to introduce myself, my name is D.J. Alvarez, International President of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. Our organization was formed in 1974, and is the largest and oldest International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club in the world with 622 chapters comprised of 18,806 members in 28 countries.

Reading the article, “Blurry lines between bikers, police clubs draw concern” written by Rik Stevens AP, I am unsure as to where he obtained his information from, and to include the Blue Knights by name in the slighted article is misleading to the public, and great our image.

In comparison to 1 percent motorcycle clubs, the only thing the Blue Knights have in common is that we ride motorcycles. Our policy and procedures totally differ from 1 percent motorcycle clubs and many law enforcement motorcycle clubs.

Our organization is comprised of active, and retired law enforcement officers and we strive to promote our organization as being a family fraternity. Spouses and children often accompany our members to the various rides and functions.

Members can ride a bike of their choosing, and are not mandated to riding an American made motorcycle (ie. Harley Davidson).

We do not have a probationary period for members, or prospects, and women are equal in our organization not only as members, but in leadership positions locally and internationally within the Blue Knights.

Our organization does not emulate 1 percent motorcycle clubs, and strive to promote a positive image to the public. We do not socialize, or “schmooze” with 1 percent motorcycle clubs as quoted in the article, and we never will.

As a whole, our organization strives on being actively involved in our communities having raised $17,400,000 for charities since the mid ‘80s.

Although I cannot speak for the other law enforcement motorcycle clubs, I can speak about the Blue Knights, because we are the good guys who “Ride with pride.” Pride is not only in our creed, but our ethos as well.
