He was born in Asheville, NC on November 4, 1942, to the late Nellie Ree Brice and Amos J. Mitchell, Sr. In March, 1960 he enlisted in the Army at the age of 17. Upon the completion of basic training, he was stationed in Germany where he met and married Renate Noe Mitchell on November 15, 1963. His 20 years of military service includes serving in Vietnam where he received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He specialized in Field Artillery and Personnel Management. During his military career he earned his B.A. from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. Amos J. Mitchell, Jr. retired as Major with an Honorable Discharge in May, 1980. After his military retirement, he pursued a career as a Financial Advisor for UBS Financial Services while serving on numerous committees including AMVETS, North Carolina Arts Council, Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and Communities in Schools before retiring in December, 2005.

Following his second retirement, he traveled around the country in his Harley. He became a member of the Blue Knights Raleigh Chapter where he served as the Events Coordinator. His compassion to serve and generosity to give to others was in complement with the brotherhood of the Blue Knights. Amos J. Mitchell, Jr. was greatly admired and respected by all who knew him. Amos J. Mitchell, Jr., 67, passed away on August 16, 2010 at Duke Raleigh Hospital.
